Have you experienced physical pain that lingers for longer than you (and perhaps your doctor and family) expected? You're not alone! One in five Canadians experiences chronic pain, making it the leading type of disability in Canada.

Research consistently shows that mental health plays a critical role in coping with chronic pain. Our research at the University of New Brunswick Rehabilitation Psychology Research Lab focuses on improving the lives of persons living with chronic pain by exploring pain's impact on mental health and well-being, healthy relationships, employability, and lifestyle. In general, we are interested in:

  • how people come to terms with having chronic pain
  • how  people cope or deal with a loved one's chronic pain
  • how people negotiate new relationships while experiencing chronic pain
  • how chronic pain affects our feelings and views of ourselves, others, and the world
  • how others view persons with chronic pain
  • resource and support seeking activities 
  • how chronic pain affects intimacy and sexual relationships

Our research so far suggests that coming to terms with chronic pain is a tough, ongoing process that many people achieve! Specifically, our findings provide evidence that persons with chronic pain CAN thrive, taking all life has to offer, despite their pain. This includes engaging in and maintaining healthy, fulfilling relationships at all stages (from dating to noteworthy anniversaries), having a positive self-identity, participating in meaningful activities (e.g., cycling, snowmobiling, painting), and meeting personal goals.
